Worst Foods to Eat

Most people have no idea what they are eating most of the time. And they eat a lot of it. And they don’t care. And they seem genuinely surprised when they develop health problems like diabetes and heart disease…Ya gotta read the labels- and then double the calories, fat and sugar since virtually nobody eats a single serving of anything in America.

But some of this stuff is just crazy.

Check these out from “Eat This, Not That”.

Omega 3’s and Farm Raised Fish

Here is some really interesting info from over at Dr. Mirkin’s blog about the lower levels of Omega 3 fatty acids (commonly referred to as fish oil) in farm raised Tilapia and Catfish. It seems that the diet that they feed the fish has a huge effect on their ability to make Omega 3 fatty acids. This shouldn’t really surprise us since the old adage “you are what you eat” probably holds true for most animals. But it is worth noting so that when you are shopping for fish, you buy the kind that has useful levels of Omega 3’s.

Fish are heart-healthy foods because they usually have high levels of omega-3 fatty acids and low levels of omega-6’s.. However, researchers at Wake Forest University School of Medicine show that farm-raised tilapia and catfish contain less than one-eighth the amount of omega-3’s found in farmed salmon or trout. The tilapia and catfish also had much larger amounts of omega-6 acids than salmon or trout.

…Omega-3 fatty acids produce prostaglandins that turn down your immunity to help prevent inflammation and the health problems it can cause. Omega-6 fatty acids promote inflammation. A major explanation for the high heart attack rate in North Americans is the high ratio of omega-6s to omega-3s in the diet that contains lots of omega-6s from vegetable oils and low amounts of omega-3’s found in fish and seeds.

You are best off picking oily fish like salmon, trout and tuna to get the most benificial Omega 3’s in your diet.
