The Insanity Never Ends…

Well, If you want to lose the fat around your waist, I would suggest diet and exercise. But in typical American fashion, in order to avoid doing anything strenuous or that might deprive you of any eating pleasure you desire, we now have this new procedure to remove fat from the waist and hips and transplant it to the breasts.I’m pretty sure this will not work for men though- unless you want that man-boob look:)  From MSNBC-

Like so many of us, Liliana Huerta wished someone, somehow, could transform the pudge around her middle to something a little more useful.

Problem solved. A new study suggests an inventive use for your muffin top: In Miami, a plastic surgeon is liposuctioning that excess fat and injecting it somewhere many women actually want a little extra bulge — their breasts. (Waste not, want not, right?)

The procedure combines two of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in America — 307,000 breast augmentations and 245,000 liposuction procedures were performed in 2008, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. It essentially gives patients a twofer, said Dr. Roger Khouri, the Miami plastic surgeon who pioneered the technique and is now reporting results in 50 women.

Health Care/Insurance Debate

This is about a hour long, but is well worth watching if you want to understand why our current system and all of the proposed health care bills in congress will fail. Unfortunately, it will probably take that sort of failure to bring about real reform in the health care industry. Whether we have an economy left afterward is the big question. From the CATO Institute…

David Goldhill is a Democrat and a business executive who paid little attention to the economics of health care before his father’s life was cut short by a hospital-acquired infection. That loss drove him to uncover the truth about American health care, which he reveals in an article that has been acclaimed as a “stemwinder” and “a fascinating read.” Goldhill explains why “it looks like this generation of ‘comprehensive’ reform will not address the underlying issues, any more than previous efforts did. Instead it will put yet more patches on the walls of an edifice that is fundamentally unsound—and then build that edifice higher.”

FRS energy drinks and Quercetin

You might have noticed the FRS energy drinks that Lance Armstrong is pimping on pretty much every website from weather.com to MSNBC. While I am pretty skeptical about the latest and greatest new, all natural, fix everything supplement that hits the market, the active ingredient in FRS is an anti-oxidant called Quercetin. It is found in the skins of many dark fruits like red grapes, blueberries, apples and citrus fruits. So I did a little research and found a good article about it on the University of Maryland Medical Center website.  While there are not a lot of studies done using it in pill form as a supplement, there is good evidence that it does in fact have tangible benefits for many common ailments including allergies, prostatitis, certain types of heart disease and possibly cancer. One of the main benefits seems to be its natural anti-inflammatory properties. But, what about the FRS claims of increased energy? Well, the UMMC article does not mention that at all but FRS’s website claims this:

Scientists believe that taking Quercetin supplements increases the amount of mitochondria in cells, and since mitochondria create energy, if you have more mitochondria you’re able to produce more energy. So the energy you feel is more of your natural energy rather than artificial feeling stimulant energy. Quercetin is chemically similar to Resveritrol and is naturally occurring in grapes, apples, and blueberries.

So, since it is available  in tablet form pretty inexpensively, I think I will give it a 1 month trial and report back weekly on if I notice any difference in either energy levels or less pain in my back and joints from the anti-inflammatory properties. Stay tuned and we will see what happens.

Calorie Counts on Menus Can Help

blueberry muffins

blueberry muffins

When NYC required restaurants to post the calorie count beside each item on their menu, many, many people were astonished to find out just how bad a blueberry muffin can be- At Dunkin Donuts, they are an amazing 510 calories. That is about what an entire meal should be for an average person. For some people, knowing the calories of an item won’t make any difference. They are going to eat whatever they want, consequences be damned. But for many people, knowing the calorie, fat and sugar information can help them make better choices. With upwards of 70% of adult Americans now overweight or obese, information like this can make a difference.

So far, only a few cities and 1 state (CA) have made calories information on the menu mandatory, but others will follow suit if there is enough support. What can you do in the mean time? First, email the corporate headquarters of the places you eat at and let them know that you want this information. You can also let them know that if they choose not to provide it, you will take your business elsewhere. But for now, most people will have to do  a little more work… as in, check their menus on the internet. All of the big chain restaurants post nutritional info on their website. So take a minute and look it over before you go out to eat. Pretty soon, you will know what to avoid at certain places you eat. Plus, you can help your family and friends make better choices too.  Also get in the habit of teaching your children to look at nutritional information as well since their generation is also suffering from soaring obesity rates due to poor diet and  fast food consumption.

6 Meal per Day Diet Plan- Evening

One of the worst feelings is going to bed hungry, so there is one more meal to keep that from happening. If you have been following the plan so far, you should have had a light dinner and be ready to eat a little more about 9pm assuming you ate dinner at about 6. If you are not hungry, don’t feel like you have to eat, but if you are, here is what you do- skip the usual late night junk like ice cream, cookies, or other high sugar snacks and eat a handful of nuts (almonds are really good) and some fruit (cherries are excellent). The nuts will satisfy your hunger and the fruit is a good substitute for sugary snacks. Try not to eat a lot since you don’t want to go to bed with a full stomach, you just don’t want to be hungry. Other foods you can eat are some leftover meat from dinner with fruit, a half bagel with low sugar jam or fruit spread or a protein bar. Try to keep the calories under 200. If you eat to much before bed, you might not sleep well, and you certainly won’t be burning those calories off while you sleep. So keep it light and you will feel better in the morning.

6 Meal per Day Diet Plan- Dinner

Meal 5- Dinner

Well, if you have been following the diet so far, you are ready for dinner! For most people, dinner is a really big meal but if you are on this diet, it shouldn’t be huge because you just ate a couple of hours ago, and you will eat again in a few more. Try this- Start with a salad with a light dressing. If the dressing is “creamy” that means it has a lot of fat. Just read the labels, and you will get a pretty good idea of which is which.

For your meat use 4 ounces (1/4 lb) of a lean meat like chicken, fish, or even beef grilled or pan seared.  Add some vegetables (Stir fry is also a great way to cook meat and vegetables together) like brocolli, carrots, green beans or whatever you like. Steam them and use low calorie butter flavored spray with seasoning like Mrs. Dash (tons of recipes at their website). You can also use some grated cheese like Parmesan or Romano to add flavor. Skip the potatoes or bread or at least skip them every other night. Brown rice is a better choice and you can flavor it with things like salsa or seasonings to make it really good. Drink water with lemon, iced tea, or some other low calorie drink. Instead of something like cake or pie for dessert, try some fresh fruit in a bowl with a little low calorie cool whip. Your body will love you for it, and you will feel a lot better through the evening.
