The new Adkins Diet is out and is probably more controversial than ever. While it promises weight loss of up to 15 lbs in a couple of weeks, it relies on the basics of super high protein with almost no carbs. The problem with this is that the human body needs carbs to function- that is why the diet works so well but is potentially unsafe for some people. One of the other problems is that a diet that is super low in carbs makes it very hard for the person to have any serious exercise or fitness program. A diet like this does work well for a short period of time and bodybuilders will diet like this for the last couple of weeks before a competition to get super lean. But everyone in the gym knows that it is impossible to train hard on this type of diet- so it is seen as a very temporary thing. And that may be the big problem with the diet- most people cannot endure it for more than a month and typically start reverting back to their old eating habits.
So, what do you do? Well, if you want the big weight loss, try it for a couple of weeks. But I think you will find that switching over to a more balanced diet that includes 6 small meals per day with moderate carbs intake will be a much better long term solution. In either case, the problem will be in changing your lifestyle. But the temptation to go back to your old ways of eating will be much harder to avoid with diets like the Adkins plan.
Tomorrow, some simple steps toward healthy living that anyone can do without a lot of pain!
